AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS:

1. Quietly enter the room.  You should enter the room with a “Spanish only”

mindset.

2. Take your assigned seat.  If you are not in your assigned seat at the bell,

Senora H cannot see you and you will be counted absent, or tardy.

3. Gather your needed materials and have them on the desk BEFORE the bell

rings:

  • Vocabulary notebook or list and / or Spanish-only binder

  • Writing utensil

4. Work silently on the “Hace Ahora (‘Do Now’)” in your composition book or

Spanish binder

5. When the bell rings, Senora H will greet the class and take roll.

AT THE END OF CLASS:

  1. When the bell rings, stop talking immediately.  Remain seated.  Please do not yell out that there are X minutes of class left or loudly ask Senora H what time the class ends in English.

  2. Senora H will tell students when it is time to pack up IN SPANISH.

  3. Look at Senora H for any last-minute instructions

  4. Bells are for teachers, not students.  You may NOT leave the room until Senora H dismisses you, IN SPANISH.

  5. QUIETLY and SLOWLY leave the room. Do not yell, or run out of the room.  Push your chairs under the table, if applicable.  Leave the room nicer than you found it.

WHEN I NEED YOUR ATTENTION:

  1. Senora H will do one of three things:

  • Say, “Manos arriba!” (Or, “Manos arriba, boca cerrado!”)

  • Say, “Uno!  Dos!  Tres!”

  • Say, “Dame cinco!”

When one of these three things happen, you are expected to:

  1. Look at Senora H.

  2. Be quiet.

  3. Hands free and in sight.

  4. Listen.

  5. Stop all movement.

DURING ANNOUNCEMENTS: Stop talking and listen, as important information and messages are being relayed.  Even a whisper is too much talking during announcements.

WHEN YOU ARE TARDY TO CLASS:

  1. You are expected to be IN YOUR SEAT and to have ALL SUPPLIES when the bell rings - NO EXCEPTIONS.

  2. If you are late, you must follow these steps:

    1. ENTER QUIETLY.  Disrupting instructional time is unacceptable.

    2. Get your materials and sit in your assigned seat as quickly and as quietly as possible.  Disturbing the students around you is unacceptable.

    3. Consequences for tardies can be found in the Clint Small Middle School Student Handbook.

WHEN YOU HAVE BEEN ABSENT AND NEED YOUR MAKE-UP WORK:

  1. Check the “ABSENT” milkcrate on Senora H’s cart.  DO NOT ask Senora H what you missed until you checked the milkcrate.

  2. The Quizlet is constantly being updated.  You can always find the link to the Quizlet on Senora H’s website: http://aislinnhargadon.wixsite.com/spanish1/spanish-1

  3. Look over the assignment(s) carefully and ask a classmate to explain them to you if you have questions.  If you have further questions, ask Senora H AFTER class, during tutorial times, or send an email to aislinn.hargadon@austinisd.org

WHEN YOU FINISH AN ASSIGNMENT:  Study your Spanish vocabulary or ask Senora H permission to use your device to study the vocabulary on Quizlet.

LATE / INCOMPLETE WORK:

  1. It is expected that all assignments are turned in on time.

  2. If you do not turn in an assignment, you can turn it in during the next class period, according to the A / B day schedule for a maximum grade of 70.

  3. If you do not turn in the work during the next class period, you will receive a 0, NO EXCEPTIONS.

  4. Only COMPLETED work will be accepted late.  No partially completed work will be accepted or credited for a 70.

  5. In-Class work  is expected to be completed, IN CLASS.  Simply not completing it, or not writing down the vocabulary words is unacceptable.

WHEN WE HAVE CLASS DISCUSSIONS:

  1. Only one person may speak at a time - this is polite and best practice.

  2. Senora H or a student will facilitate.

  3. If you want to talk, raise your hand.

  4. Senora H or the facilitator will call on you to speak

  5. Blurting out is not permitted and will not be tolerated.

WHEN WE WORK IN PARTNERS / GROUPS:

  1. Group / Partner work is to be complete in SPANISH ONLY.  Speaking in English will lower your participation grade, and therefore your overall grade.   When in doubt, keep it simple!

  2. Voices quiet so only your group / partner can hear you.

  3. Stay in your assigned area - do not wander around the room or talk to anyone in another group.

  4. Groups / Partners will be formed in numerous ways, and will change often.  We are a community and you are expected to work with EVERYONE IN CLASS.

  5. Work steadily and cooperatively and encourage and help each other.

  6. Listen for the attention signal.

  7. Need help? First ask someone you’re working with, then raise your hand.

WHAT IF I FORGOT TO BRING MY MATERIALS?:

  1. You are expected to have your materials every day.

  2. If you need to borrow materials, ask a classmate BEFORE the bell rings.

  3. Consistently forgetting to bring supplies will not be tolerated and will result in discipline consequences.

HALLWAY PASSES:

  1. You are expected to take care of personal needs DURING your passing periods (you have 5 minutes).

  2. Hallway passes will only be granted for genuine emergencies.

  3. No hallway passes will be signed during the first and last 10 minutes of class.

OFF LIMIT AREAS TO STUDENTS:  DO NOT touch Senora H’s cart or go through Senora H’s materials.  If you need materials, they will be passed out to you.  If you have a question or need something else, ask Senora H before you act.

Why do I need a composition book or Spanish binder?

Each student needs a composition book or small binder to devote solely and entirely to Spanish.  The book or binder should be neat and organized and will act as a portfolio for each student.  Students are expected to keep one book or binder just for Spanish so that they can quickly and easily write down words and definitions, and find the needed materials.

How should I organize the composition book or binder?

Each book or binder should have a section for vocabulary, a section for “Hace Ahora (‘Do Now’),” a section for quizzes / tests, and a section for other handouts, including the syllabus and procedures.  Hole punch to store, or, glue / staple the items into your composition book or binder.

What will we be graded on?

Basically, students are expected to try.  Number grades will be taken for participation, some in-class work, occasional homework, and quizzes / tests.  Saying “I don’t know how to spell it,” or “I don’t know how to say it” is not acceptable, because students will never only be graded on grammar or pronunciation.  Again, I am asking you to try.

What does “participation” mean?

“Participation” means you show up on time and ready to learn and speak IN SPANISH.  You have your materials, you engage in class work, partner work, and / or group work.  You complete homework, and you complete quizzes / tests to the best of your ability.  You come to class with an open mind and a curiosity to learn more about how to express yourself in Spanish.  Saying “I can’t,” or actively choosing to not participate in class by being silent or speaking English will result in a poor participation grade, and probably a poor grade overall.

Why do you only speak to us in Spanish / why do we stand in a circle / why won’t you just tell us what it means?

Senora H’s class is being taught in a proficiency methodology, which means that to pass Spanish 1, you will learn how to introduce yourself, talk about your own identity, talk about your family and friends, talk about other cultures and globalization, etc.  The unit topics are aligned to the Pre-AP test.  In proficiency methodology, there is a great de-emphasis on grammar and an emphasis on immediate functionality.
